Please send Ivy Jane (MS, 7 yo, left) your prayers and well wishes this morning. She has had countless puppies and has 2 mammary cysts that have started bleeding, so Ivy is on her way to the vet this morning. To prepare, she is relaxing with her foster sibling. Other than the cysts, she is healthy and has her daily routine down. She gets along well with other dogs but doesn’t play with them – she just wants to play with her humans. She also has a ball obsession and the only time she doesn’t have a ball or toy in her mouth is when she is eating. Her foster dad Jason said she is really very lovable and so happy to be out of the conditions she was in. Thank you, Jason and Christy, for all you do for Ivy Jane! Once she has healed from today, she’ll be ready for adoption so keep your eyes out for her post on our website. #PrayersForIvyJane #GSPcommunity #GSPoftheday #MS Join us in welcoming Kara into rescue. She is six years old and came from the Berkeley Animal Shelter in SC. Her foster dad Jamie said her first night/day went well…
Jamie said, “She's typical GSP and pretty exuberant. She's had a lot of socialization and some training. Not much of an off switch. She understands Come, Sit, Off, No, Leave it, recognizes her name, and her reliability work is in progress. No leash training. Rides in a truck well. She is obsessive about balls and stuffies. She loves everyone - big lovebug. Fine with my older male dog. She’s eager to please and eats but doesn’t have a big appetite. Just wound up most of the time, trots and runs everywhere, goes over furniture not around. I walked her 3.5 miles on the beach this a.m. and she curled up for maybe 5 minutes after. She prefers to stand when not running and liked getting a rinse off with a hose. She seems more like a one-year-old, than a six-year-old, and a give-up than a left-behind.” What a great start Kara! She will need a few more weeks in rescue for temperament evaluation and to be spayed before she’s ready for adoption. A very big thank you to Jamie for fostering her. This is Jamie’s 3rd foster dog with SEGSP (and only 1 foster fail…so far 😊). #WelcomeKara #GSPoftheday #GermanShorthairedPointer #SC This is what Waylon thinks about getting neutered LOL! This photo was taken right before surgery. His foster mom Jennifer said he was scared so they let her stay with him until he went to sleep. He handled surgery just fine, but we understand he was a bit discombobulated before surgery – poor guy.
Thank you, Jennifer, for being with him for support! And now that he’s neutered, he’s ready to be adopted. But don’t get your hopes up because a little birdie said he’d like to stay where he is… we’ll confirm in a later post 😊 #GSPrescue #GSPfunny #gspsupport Molly (NC, 8 yo) is looking like a true “snuggle bug” and “shadow” according to her foster mom Susan. Here is her full update on this pretty gal…
“She loves everyone and is enjoying being part of a pack. She is learning what toys and bones are all about and that “sisters” are good playmates. She loves to hunt critters and to go for walks; although, we are still learning how to walk on a leash especially when critters tease her. She enjoys hanging out watching TV or sitting by her foster mom while she works. She is also happy hanging out in her kennel for some downtime or nighttime. Her favorite time of the day is dinner time and snuggle time. She will do anything for a treat especially if it has peanut butter on it. She wants to be by your side at all times because she thinks she might miss out on something. Molly will be having surgery on June 23rd to remove a few mammary tumors but is looking forward to having them gone.” Thank you so much Susan. Molly is Susan’s 6th GSP she has fostered for SEGSP (with 2 beautiful foster fails). Molly will need some recovery time after her surgery before she’s ready for adoption. #GSPsnugglebug #GSPshadow #GSP #NC Ranger (AL, 1 yo) has finally completed his heartworm treatment – yay! His foster dad Robert said, “Ranger is doing very well and we're now past the recovery period from heartworm treatments. He has a great personality, a cat harassing him, and he is great with that. I've gotten him dialed in with crate training, sit/heel/stop/retrieve commands, and he seems to have hunting abilities that can be perfected with a little more training. He is very healthy and energetic, loves to run and swim, and never gets tired of chasing squirrels and birds! I've put about 10 pounds on him since I picked him up, he was skin and bones when I got him from the shelter. I'm having a trainer I know work with him for a month at my expense and dial in his remaining obedience work like off-leash, field commands, and behaviors in stores and restaurants etc., and to help determine his natural capabilities for retrieving and pointing, which I'll have him trained for if we decide to adopt.” Wow, Ranger, you hit the jackpot with your foster home! Thank you, Robert, for all you’ve done and are doing for Ranger. We look forward to hearing how his training goes…
#AL Cedar (FL, 1 yo) is doing well now that he’s out of the shelter and in a wonderful home with foster mom Vicky. He has been helping her with farm life, including baby lambs. It’s exhausting work, so she is happy for Cedar’s help.
Vicky said, “Ceder is awesome! He's highly trained; sit, shake, lay down, "no" and "out". He’s respectful to fences and gates, has okay recall, doesn't dig, and gets along with everyone except cats and birds he likes to chase. He does have a tendency to jump when excited but hasn't attempted counter surfing. He's a genuinely happy guy, who wants to please. He loves water and wants to play with his fur foster siblings so bad but can't right now. His exterior back right leg wound is healed, but the outcome of his leg usage long term has yet to be determined. It sounds like he will always have a bit of a "hitch" to it. Either way we are happy to be blessed with his gentle, sweet, loving soul daily. He seems to keep up with the flow of the farm well. He's a well-trained, amazing boy, who is respectful, and gets along with everyone and everything. He's a people pleaser and so sweet.” Cedar had an injury to his hind leg when he arrived in rescue (like it was caught up with a rope) so he has about 3 weeks of rest left in his recovery, and it will be a slow process of increased activity under the Vets guidance. Get well soon Cedar and thank you Vicky for nursing him back to full strength (and teaching him about farm life) #FL Welcome to rescue Hazel (AL). Hazel and her friend Raven (who is still waiting for a foster home) were strays at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. Hazel is around 6 years old, 38 lbs (very underweight), and thankfully is heartworm negative. We are thrilled that our Alabama foster volunteer, Sandra, stepped up immediately to foster Hazel. This will be Sandra’s fourth foster dog for SEGSP Rescue – THANK YOU Sandra! Hazel may not have worms, but she’ll need to gain a few pounds before she can be spayed, microchipped, temperament tested, as well as learn some basic commands before she is ready for adoption. Cross your fingers that she doesn’t have kennel cough, but that’s likely the case. If all goes well, that will be in about 4 weeks, but we anticipate a little longer.
#AL Duke (7 yo) found a wonderful foster home with Melissa and Stuart in SC – thank you both so much!
Melissa said, “He is doing great! He is very active and well trained. He has been fetching a ball, going on rides in the golf cart, playing with toys, etc. He is definitely a people dog and is so excited to meet everyone. We will definitely take a family photo soon and send it to you! Thank you so much for trusting us with Duke. We love him already!” We’re looking forward to more updates on Duke! #SC Jax (SC, 3 yo) had his first heartworm injection on Tuesday and is okay, but very sleepy. His foster dad Paden said, “He’s the most loving, affectionate boy ever! He wants to be by your side at all times and as close to you as he possibly can. He’s the calmest GSP I have ever - met extremely calm and lazy. Jax might only be 3 but he acts like a grump especially when it’s past his bedtime!”
Jax has 2 more months of heartworm treatment before he can be adopted. A BIG thank you to Paden for fostering a heartworm positive dog – they are the hardest to place and he stepped up right away. Jax is a very lucky boy! #SC We think foster Jay (TN) is a bit younger than we first thought, maybe around 9 months or so old. He’s doing so well in foster care. Accidents are now few and far between and improving daily. And he’s learning so much! Just look at him!
His foster mom says, “He’s definitely a youngster and wants to play with Sky (his foster sister, and SEGSP alum), ALL THE TIME. He listens when Sky lets him know it’s too much. He wants to listen and please. He’s always happy and it seems like he’s always smiling. He’s up for a walk anytime and can hang with the big dogs, even though he is super small.” Jay, we are so proud of you. What a good boy! Jay will be in foster care for another few weeks while we continue to prepare him for his forever home. Could that be with you? #TN |
