Phoebe (GA, 2yo) foster dog news

5/18/2025

Phoebe (GA, 2 yo) is making progress in her foster home and with her heartworm treatment. Her foster dad Glen said, “She has learned the commands to kennel, no, sit(does better thank before). Her recall is getting better, especially when food is involved. She is starting to be more loving, will lick your hands and arms. The way she acts I think she is closer to one year old. She is still not 100% housebroken, forgets to pee when outside and then comes in and pees. Hardest GSP I have had to house train! She is clear of hookworms, yeah!!!!! She is on doxycycline now, has about 10 days left. She has really started liking treats, if Warner eats it she will try it. Likes carrots a lot.” Thank you, Glen, – you’re an awesome foster dad! Phoebe has a few more months left in rescue for her heartworm treatment before she can search for her forever home.

#GAJeff (GA, 1 ½ yo) had his surgery last week to fix his cherry eye and was also neutered. His foster mom Dot said, “He’s doing well, he’s in the biggest Cone of Shame and looks like a lamp shade but he’s very tolerant of it, he’s more annoyed at being on bed rest and not allowed to run and play. Aside from surgery recovery, he is very healthy. He is almost done with a 6-week manners class and has made so much progress. He is crazy smart and learns quickly, he can be a bit impulsive but with patience he really shines. He used to be wary of other people, but manners class has helped him blossom socially. He is really a super happy and loving boy. He has so much energy in the backyard but in the house, he mostly turns into a potato and just wants to curl up with you for hours on end. He loves playing with his 3 GSP foster brothers and in general just loves to be outside using his nose when he isn’t cuddled up.”
Thank you, Dot!  Sounds like Jeff is a turn-key GSP.

Phoebe (GA, 2 yo) foster dog news

4/11/2025

Poor Phoebe (GA, 2 yo), she not only has heartworms, but also was positive for hookworms.  Thank you to her foster dad Glen for quickly getting her seen by a vet and on medication.

Glen said “Phoebe has learned how to climb stairs (a little hesitant at first) and she’s glad for her cute doggie coat since it was pretty cold outside (and she wants to look at birds). Phoebe is progressing, she loves her kennel and sleeps all night. She is not bothered by thunder, yeah! She has learned to sit, stay (sometimes) and knows no. She has learned what treats and toys are. Still working on recall when her mind is focused on something. She has been spayed and had her rabies and flu shots. She plays with Warner, and when she gets a little rough sometimes, Warner lets her know.

Word has it Phoebe loves her foster GSP brother Warner (a SEGSP alum) and is “the absolute most precious little girl.”  Thank you Glen and Marcela (who have foster failed twice)…

Jeff - GA

Jeff (GA, 1 ½ yo) has overcome a lot since entering rescue.  He came to rescue with kennel cough and his process was slowed due to the exploratory surgery for a toy ingested prior to SEGSP.  He still needs surgery to correct a cherry eye and to be neutered before he’s ready for adoption. Poor guy.
So far, he has mastered house-training, crate-training, socialization with other dogs and people as well as basic commands.  Word has it he’s also had a lot of love and cuddling by his foster family as well (thank you all for everything you do for Jeff).

Dot said, “Jeff's favorite activities are searching for critters in the yard, playing chase with his foster dog siblings and throwing his chews around. So far, we have yet to find anything he really dislikes. He is VERY snuggly and turns to Jello in our arms. Jeff has a full tail, and it is SO expressive, if you look at him or walk up to him it starts thumping. He also loves affection; all he wants is to cuddle and he makes little noises and sighs when you love on him. He’s also really funny when he plays with his toys because he throws them around and jumps at them like he’s trying to surprise his toys. Over the last month Jeff has really started to pick up on some of the manners we’ve been trying to work on. At first it felt like he just wouldn’t get it, but I think he’s started to calm down and be more comfortable, so more progress is being made."

Phoebe (GA) foster dog news

Welcome to SEGSP Phoebe (GA)!  Phoebe was surrendered to an Alabama shelter for basically being a GSP – too much energy.  She is 2 yrs old, will need to be spayed and sadly is heartworm positive (so 4 months in rescue).   Thank you to our AL/MS Volunteer Coordinator, Cheyenne, and her husband Joshua for giving Phoebe her freedom ride and transporting her to meet her foster parents Glen and Marcela.

Cheyenne said, “She is the absolute most precious little girl. She is so petite and the perfect size. I don’t know how anyone could meet her without falling in love. We had a little over 4 hours with her before heading to Auburn to meet Glen and we had so much fun. She did great in the house, wonderful in the car, and okay on her walk but needs a little leash training. She seems to be pretty mild mannered for a GSP.”  And Glen said Phoebe has already made friends with her foster GSP sibling, Warner.

YAY Phoebe!  Thank you to everyone who helped Phoebe, including the staff of the Elmore County Humane Society.  More updates to come…
