Henry (MS, 3 yo, 65 lbs.) foster dog news

10/22/2025

Henry (MS, 3 yo, 65 lbs.) is handling his heartworm treatment like a true champ.

His foster dad Joshua said, “Henry is doing really well. His ears are better already and just a couple more days should be back to 100%. He is not a fan of the cage restrictions (see image for what he thinks of that). He is just a 65lb baby that wants to be next/touching you, so he does whine. He is crate trained and will adhere to “crate” command. He sleeps really well in the crate at night. He has so much personality and is just happy to be included in any of your activities. (Extra for rides and snack time). He has lots of energy and drive; several times he has pointed or brought his leash for a walk…  An active lifestyle would fit him best as a forever home. I would not recommend a home with small children or senior citizens…. There will be no malicious intent but his size, excitement, and at time lack of special awareness would not pair well.”

When Henry came to rescue, he was in rough shape—heartworm positive, underweight, and recovering from a leg injury after being abandoned by his owner. Thanks to a kind Good Samaritan who stepped in and contacted SEGSP, Henry now has a second chance at the life he deserves.

He’s gaining healthy weight, feeling stronger every day, and has just a couple more months of treatment before he’ll be ready to find his forever home. A huge thank you to Joshua and Regan for giving Henry the love, structure, and fun he needed to start thriving!

Heidi (MS, 2 yo) foster dog news

10/16/2025

Welcome to SEGSP Heidi (MS, 2 yo)!  First, we’d like to thank our volunteer Stephanie, who picked up Heidi from the shelter in AL and drove her to her foster home in MS – that is a very long drive!  We now just have 2 more GSPs in Alabama and Mississippi shelters that need foster homes – yes, it’s raining GSPs in the southeast again!

Heidi’s foster mom said, “Heidi is doing great!  She is always by Scott or myself, loves to play with Wally and Griff although they sometimes play pretty spastic and she is not sure what to think yet...LOL.  She is definitely a lap dog and loves her belly rubs.  She has been doing great on the leash, no accidents in the house and working on basic commands.”

We were also told by the shelter that she didn’t react to a cat that smacked her on the nose and is submissive and sweet.  Heidi is healthy, and will be spayed soon, so if all goes well, she will be ready for adoption in a month.

THANK YOU to Scott and Laura, who are new foster volunteers, but adopted SEGSP’s Wally earlier this year.  We also want to thank Fostina, a shelter volunteer, who contacted us about Heidi.

Birdie (MS, 6 yo) foster dog news

9/26/2025

Birdie (MS, 6 yo) is doing great!  Her foster mom Brooke said, “She’s definitely 6 years young, she was so excited/jumpy/chewy that first week or so that I just knew she was going to be a troublemaker - but she proved me wrong and has settled in really well. She hasn’t 100% mastered the potty-training thing but she’s almost got it and is doing great otherwise with inside manners. She loves getting pets and attention and is definitely a cuddle bug. She’s on our heels anytime we move around the house but is getting more independent and using the doggy door to take herself outside. She’s very friendly with everyone and is just a happy go lucky girl. She is slightly chaotic on the stairs to our deck but working on slowing down and touching all the steps without parkouring off the top every time ha.”
Awesome Birdie – you’ve got this!  She came from an AL shelter so who knows what her first 6 years of life was, but it definitely wasn’t as an inside family member. THANK YOU, Brooke and Lacey, for showing Birdie how awesome life can be.

Henry (MS, 3 yo 66 lbs.) foster dog news

9/24/2025

Henry (MS, 3 yo) may have had some smelly ear issues that are much better now, but he’s doing well in rescue overall and has started his heartworm treatment.  If all goes well, Henry will be done with his treatment in January and can start the new year with his future forever family.

His foster dad Joshua said, “He has been doing really good in the home and has really taken to his environment. He is the absolute sweetest dog and is all love. He loves with his whole body (he actually will put his whole-body weight on you). He has little to no spacial awareness and is very prone to running into things. He is currently at 64 lbs and was really good at the vet. He is getting much better on the leash and learning his manners.  He has discovered pup cups and thinks that the magical fairies (the baristas) only mission (job) is to deliver his pup cups through the portal (drive thru window). He is still performing sqeakerectomys”

Thank you, Joshua and Regan, for fostering Henry!  He came to rescue in rough shape when a Good Samaritan took him in and contacted us.  It appeared that he had been abandoned, was heartworm positive, very thin and was treated for a leg injury.   His life is forever changed by the caring people helping him.

Henry (MS, 3 yo, 66 lbs), on the right, is doing amazing according to his foster dad Joshua. He is healing up from his neuter surgery well and looking forward to when his heartworm treatment is over. He is learning every day and gaining manners.

Joshua said, “He is a good boy but does not like when foster-dad moves too fast (maybe some trauma there). He and his foster-sister (Pepper) have become best friends. He has the love and energy to share with her. He also has his doctorate and specializes in squeaker-ectomy surgery.  Henry does well with cats, is eager to learn (highly food motivated), loves to go on rides and walks and is a champion cuddle partner.”

Thank you, Joshua!  Henry has a few more months in rescue while he heals from heartworms before he’s ready for adoption. We look forward to more updates.

Birdie (MS) - Foster Dog News

9/5/2025

YAY Birdie (MS, 2 yo) – her heartworm test came back negative! Her foster mom Brooke said, “Birdie is doing great and is a super happy and sweet girl. She is very bouncy and energetic, but she will settle down pretty good. She is still getting use to our house and yard so lots of things to sniff and investigate. She’s been great in the kennel, in the car, at the vet, sleeps all night, is friendly with our dogs, and loves pets. She is working hard at learning some inside manners!”

THANK YOU, Brooke and Lacey, for helping Birdie learn the ropes of indoor living and being loved.  Birdie is healthy, so has a couple more weeks of temperament evaluation before she’s ready for adoption.

Birdie (2 yo, MS) Foster Dog News

8/25/2025

Welcome to rescue Birdie (MS, 2 yo)!  Birdie came from an Alabama shelter.  A BIG thank you to Danny for taking an extra leg on Birdie’s transport and thank you to Andrew and Brooke for taking the other two legs.

Birdie is now safely at her foster home with Brooke and Lacey.  She is healthy, spayed and is good with other dogs and all humans.  THANK YOU, Brooke and Lacey, for giving Birdie a safe, loving home to learn some basic good manners and we can learn more about her temperament.

If all goes well, Birdie will be in rescue for about 4 weeks, then will be ready for adoption.  We look forward to hearing more about her personality.

Henry (MS, 3 yo) foster dog news

8/21/2025

Picture
Henry (MS, 3 yo, 66 lbs.) is healing nicely from the leg wound he had when he came into rescue in July. He was retested for heartworms and unfortunately, yes, he has them.  His rescue story is sad… found by a Good Samaritan (thank you Shannon) after apparently being abandoned).   Our awesome volunteer, Joshua, offered to foster Henry and is giving him an awesome place to heal, get some basic training and lots of love so he can heal physically and emotionally.

Joshua said, “He is an absolute sweetheart. Henry is your typical Velcro GSP that what’s to be everywhere you are. He loves pets and will try and climb in your lap as soon as you sit down. We are still working on some manners as he is just happy to be loved. He wants so badly to be on the couch (still working on that). Every second is play-time as he has tons of energy. He isn’t aggressive at all and is a bit skittish of quick movements. He is very docile and he is quick to play with the cat but will back down very quickly. He loves to be outside and play tug-o-war with his foster sister and foster parents.”

Henry has been neutered but will be in rescue for a few more months while he heals from his heartworms before he’s ready for adoption. We look forward to happy updates on Henry.

Johnny (MS, 8 yo) foster dog news

8/12/2025

Johnny’s journey now includes finding his voice and, of course, healing.  Sweet Johnny (8 yo, MS) had his first heartworm treatment injection on Friday — a big milestone on his road to recovery! His foster mom, MaryAsa, shared that Johnny found his bark this week — and it’s just as gentle and endearing as he is.

Johnny loves car rides, swimming, and resting his head in your lap for pets and attention. He came to rescue alongside his best friend June (now looking for her forever home on our website) after a Good Samaritan witnessed both dogs being thrown over a bridge and brought them safely to an Alabama shelter.

A huge thank you to MaryAsa, who is giving Johnny the love and care he’s always deserved. He has two more months of heartworm treatment before he’ll be ready to find his forever family — and we can’t wait to see him happy in his forever home.
