Johnny Peter (KY/TN) foster dog news

6/30/2025

Meet Johnny Peter – Proof That It’s Never Too Late for a New Beginning Johnny Peter and his sister (or pack mate), Juni (currently in foster care with SEGSP Rescue), were picked up as strays in Kentucky. At 10 years old, heartworm positive, unneutered, and likely used for breeding most of his life, Johnny Peter hadn’t known what it meant to be truly loved… until now. When the local rescue that covers KY had no foster homes available and couldn’t take them in, they asked SEGSP for help. Thanks to a quick team effort, we were able to say yes—and Johnny Peter’s freedom ride began. Gundi, Mariah, Joe, Sarah, and Rebecca formed his transport team, with the Kesslers kindly stepping in to host him overnight. They gave him his first bath in who knows how long and, more importantly, began showing him what it feels like to be safe and cared for. Johnny Peter is now settling into his foster home with the amazing Perry family and their sweet pup, Alula. He’s working on gaining weight (he came to us weighing only 38 pounds), building strength, and beginning heartworm treatment. He’ll be with us for a few months as he heals and prepares for his next chapter—a loving retirement home. After just a couple of nights, his foster mom shared this sweet update: “He slept all night in his kennel without a peep! Ate a good breakfast and has been hanging out. He loves naps in Alula’s kennel, scratches at the back door when he wants to go out, and hasn’t had any major accidents—just a few marking attempts. He lives for snuggles—leans in close, rests his head in your lap, makes the sweetest little rumble sounds to get your attention. Outside, he’s totally content trotting around and following the scent trails of the neighborhood rabbits!” Johnny still has a journey ahead, but thanks to our rescue village, his future is finally bright. Stay tuned as this deserving senior gets healthy and begins his search for a forever home filled with love.

Dixie (TN) foster dog news

4/7/2025

Please help us give a warm SEGSP welcome to Dixie, a beautiful liver and white full-blooded GSP who just made her way to Middle Tennessee! At nearly four years old, Dixie is spayed, housebroken, and crate trained (though she prefers not to be crated for long stretches). Huge thanks to Shane, Chad and Logan, who helped with her transport.  And Logan even temp fostered her overnight before she went to her foster home.  We are so grateful to Jeff and his SEGSP alum and fantastic foster sister, Josey, for welcoming her into their home as a foster.

Dixie is full of life and love! She’s dog-friendly, lives peacefully with a cat (after some initial curiosity), and absolutely adores children. She loves to cuddle, play fetch and tug-of-war, run and explore, and she’s even a fan of healthy snacks like carrots. She’s smart, too — she knows commands like sit, shake, lay down, stay, “go kennel,” “potty,” and “out.”

She does pull on a leash, so she’ll need someone to help her practice good walking manners. Dixie is fearless and curious — when the other dogs run from a strange noise, Dixie is the brave one who runs toward it to investigate! She’s used to having free roam of the house and does great when left alone.

Dixie will be in foster care for about a month before she’s ready to find her forever family. She’d thrive in a home with at least one other dog and lots of love to share.

Welcome to the SEGSP family, Dixie — we’re so glad you’re here!
