Lucy

We celebrate every rescue and every adoption as a success, but every so often, there’s one who leaves a permanent paw print on our hearts. Our 2015 alumna, Lucy (formerly Sigourney), is one we will treasure and never forget.

Lucy passed away on June 13, 2025. Her journey began in the most dramatic way… as a feral, stray dog in Georgia, and transformed into a life filled with devotion, love, and the kind of spoiling only a truly cherished family member receives. Her first foster parents, Tiffany and Blake, welcomed her, knowing she would be terrified. Through their patience and kindness, Lucy learned that humans could be safe. Her second foster parents, Mark and Annah, then committed to the long, winding road of helping Lucy see the beauty in life. After 18 months of steady love and trust-building, they helped her find the forever family who adored her completely.

Lucy’s forever mom Anja wanted everyone to know just how special she was: “She was 15, looking 5, acting 8. Towards the end she developed luxating patella (dislocation of her kneecap) but dealt with it in a Lucy way… strong.  She was our everything.  The moment Liam was born, Lucy found purpose.  I sometimes think he was born just to bring her light.  They were inseparable ever since.  She became his mama, his best friend and he was her rock, her world.  He helped her through losing Avery last year, which was so hard on her and she was never quite the same after but thankfully she still had her Liam.  We are a mess and we have no idea what to do without her.  It’s hard watching Liam in so much pain. He cries for her every day. Standing outside looking up to the clouds. He tried to explain to his friend who asked where she is that she’s in heaven.  In the clouds.  He asked if she was on the airplane. So he said “she’s in the clouds. She’s the rain.”  I love how he tried to explain.  And I love thinking of her as the rain.  Nurturing everything, being essential for life.  Because that’s what she was to us and every child she ever met.”

Between hello and goodbye there was love. So much love.   --- Unknown
