Every once in a while, the biggest victories don’t look like much to anyone else… but they mean everything.

Meet Coal, our sweet 2-year-old foster in Tennessee. Before rescue, he spent his entire life in an outdoor kennel with very little human interaction and inconsistent meals. People simply weren’t something he learned to trust.

His foster dad, Will, has been incredible. He celebrates every tiny step forward because he knows that’s how healing happens.

This week brought a milestone worth celebrating: Will finally got a selfie with Coal! It only took three tries before Coal felt comfortable enough to let him get that close—and that’s a huge win.

Coal continues to make slow, steady progress. Lately, he’s been coming over to Will asking for a little attention. That’s something we weren’t sure we’d ever see. He still runs away when Will walks toward him, and if someone approaches too confidently, he’ll cower. But if Will quietly reaches out to pet him, Coal is beginning to accept that love.

One thing Coal has never questioned is other dogs. He absolutely loves his pack of German Shorthaired Pointer foster siblings and fits right in with them.

Now we just need him to learn what his foster family already knows: people can be good, too.

Healing from a lifetime of neglect isn’t measured in days or weeks. It’s measured in moments like a hesitant approach, a gentle touch accepted, or a selfie that once seemed impossible.

We’re so proud of you, Coal. And we’re incredibly grateful for foster families like Will’s, who understand that sometimes the greatest act of love is simply being patient enough to let a dog heal at his own pace.
