Melvin (AL)

Hi, my name is Melvin.  I am the sweetest, most beautiful, smart, loving and gentle, well... Just all the things, GSP.  I was lost in Mobile, Alabama.  Some very kind people called the SEGSP rescue, and some of their volunteers picked me up, took me to a veterinarian to be examined, updated on vaccinations, and neutered.  During my recovery a very kind family cared for me.  They found a foster family for me, and I made a very long (almost 9 hrs.) trip to Huntsville, Alabama to my new foster family's home.  Being lost was hard but I have adjusted marvelously.  Everyone was so kind and my foster family showed me I was going to be loved and cared for, and just fine.

In my new home I have met so many new people, including children, and lots of other dogs.  My new foster family says I am the most loving and sweet GSP they have ever met, but I am also a prototypical GSP.  I am active, energetic, athletic, playful, super smart, loving, and a little bit stubborn. I recently met my foster parents' 6-yr old grandson, and I was polite, well behaved and I loved him so much. He laughingly said I gave him 1,000 kisses.  I haven't met the younger children.  SEGSP rescue will not let me be adopted to a family with a child younger than 6yrs old because I might be a little too much for them.

Since my foster family doesn't have any other pups, I go to doggy daycare for socialization and exercise.  The staff at daycare adore me and tell mom I am the best dog. I get along well with, and can play with, any of the other dogs my size.  Well, except for some grumpy pups who don't get along with any of the other pups.  I haven't been around cats so I don't know if I could get along with them.  

I am currently in obedience training with my foster mom.  My trainer says I am the best dog!  He would adopt me, but his dog would be too jealous.  The trainer says I am so smart.  He is training my foster mom to know how to tell me what she wants me to do.  I am house and kennel/crate trained.  I know "sit" and "down".  I have learned "let's go", "leave it" and "wait".  I am a quick learner.  Foster Mom... not so much, but she is making progress.  

I sleep in my crate all night long and I am good in it if my foster mom needs to leave me in it when she cannot keep an eye on me.  After all, I would love to explore the house! I do pretty well in the car, though I would prefer to sit in the front seat with my foster mom and dad.  They use a short leash attached to a seat belt to keep me safe in the back seat when we go somewhere.  

My foster parents think I deserve an active, loving family with a fenced yard to run and play in.  Another dog, or dogs, for me to play with would be ideal.  I love to play with my family in the backyard.  If you are looking for a fun, active, adventurous, loyal, love bug, who will love you with his whole heart, and think I might just be the one, please complete an application form (if you haven't already) and email my foster mom at [email protected].  Adoptions are limited to the 7 southeastern states.
