At long last Ernest is available for adoption! This 1.5 year old boy was rescued in March and was skittish, untrusting, and 20 lbs underweight. It has taken him 3 months to gain some confidence and begin to trust. He is ready for adoption to the right family.
Ernie is very well crate trained, house trained, and is learning basic commands and how to walk nicely on a leash. He is a great car rider, but does get a little nauseous in the car. He's actually fairly calm for a GSP, but does love to run around and play with other dogs. He is great with small or large dogs. He has not been tested around cats or livestock.
Ernie needs a calm home environment with a calm owner. He does not do well with loud noises, raised voices, or negative energy. It will take an especially patient person to adopt Ernest, as he is slow to trust people still. It will take him a while to adjust to his new environment. His foster mom works from home so he is used to having someone with him a lot of the time, but does fine in his crate when she is not home and overnight.
Ernest must go to a home with an experienced GSP owner, and one with experience working with rehabilitated foster dogs. Because of his sensitivity to chaotic situations, no homes with small children, but teenagers would be fine. He has never shown any signs of being an escape artist, but will need a large, fenced yard to exercise in and claim as his own. Ernie MUST go to a home with a well-established, confident dog(s). He lived in a kennel his whole life until he was rescued, and is very comfortable with other dogs- much more so than people. He definitely gains confidence being around other dogs. This will provide him a playmate and help ease him into his transition.
Ernie is a sweet boy that loves cheese, bacon or beef doggy stick treats, and likes to selectively cuddle with his human. Since he did not have a name when he came into rescue, Ernest (or Ernie) is the only name he has ever known. We prefer that it not be changed.
