Byrd came into rescue in March 2019. He is six years young and will be a perfect addition for someone who wants the personality of a GSP but isn’t up to the high energy needs often associated with the breed. He has been perfect in the house, no accidents, no attempts to get on furniture, doesn’t counter surf or try to steal things. He enjoys his toys as much as lounging in front of TV.
Byrd is easily contained. He does not challenge fences, crates or xpens. He does not rush doors. No separation anxiety here. He will whine a little when he has to go out (his potty habits are very predictable) and has a lovely, deep voice to alert appropriately to unfamiliar visitors. He has been to Home Depot and a small, local park where he is mildly interested in people, but not straining to greet them or jump up. He rides in the car very well.
Byrd hasn’t been around small children but enjoyed the church youth group when they came to visit. He is not at all food aggressive with people or packmates, likes to be petted all over (feet, ears, hugs, etc.) so kids could be just fine. He’s nonreactive with dogs in his house-pack, and played nicely with a GSP friend he made while at the doggie-sitter. He can react to dogs he hasn’t been properly introduced to. His human leader will have to set the tone for interactions.
Cats need a proper introduction as well. Some he likes to know. Some he likes to chase. The right cat and the right introduction may be just fine.
Byrd’s obedience training is coming along nicely. He is beautiful on a leash, walking at nice pace, not pulling or overly sniffy unless allowed. He has sit, down, stay, come/here, wait, don’t touch, that’ll-do (you’re done) and get-on-the-box (a platform for tight sits) down pat. He’s not much of a retriever, but we’re working on that. We’re also working on a “stand” and “pivot” command. He is super food motivated so learning is easy to start. He needs lots of repetition to master a skill.
Byrd has been through heartworm treatment while in rescue and is ready for adoption. He’s a beautiful boy with a sweet spirit who is ready to find his forever home.
