Hi! My name is Bandit, but my foster family calls me Benji and I’m an (almost) 3 year old boy who loves adventure! I am a good sized boy at 60 pounds and the vet said I should really be 62-65 pounds. I've been hanging out with my foster family near Charlotte, NC.
I was surrendered to a clinic for being a little too enthusiastic in my communication with humans. A wonderful technician at the clinic took me in and helped me start learning proper dog behaviors and worked on getting me healthy until SE GSP Rescue could find me a foster home.
It's true that I'm a little mouthy (I still have a lot of youth in me), but what I really need is structure and a strong pack leader I can trust (the human kind). I am a teenager after all and like to see if I can take a turn at being in charge. With proper training and consistency, I have been a perfect buddy. I do great on walks, in public and even at the vet when my foster mom wasn’t allowed in with me! The vet had to shave and scrub a lot of fresh wounds on my face and throat and I didn’t mind it at all!
I have learned I love water and swimming, being off leash (with an e collar) while my humans play disc golf and going on hikes! I really like dogs who are either calm or like to play chase, but I’m unsure of loud dogs or those who like to wrestle. I love cuddling and even being in my crate when my humans are gone! When you are home, I don’t jump on you but love to bring you toys/shirts/towels as a gift when I get really excited. If you could leave the back door open, or have a doggy door, I will love being at home all the time. I really love sitting and watching over my domain and occasionally chasing a bunny or squirrel - but I’m not very good at catching them. I even know the word “bird” and some hand commands! I’m great at “sit,” “stay,” “in your crate,” and “lay down.” I always keep my foster parents laughing and love to love on them too. Mom's favorite thing about me is that when she gets home, I’m so happy to see her, I like to gently mouth her hand and hurry her into the house so I can get pets.
I know I sound great, but no one is perfect! Although I'm not allowed to have any human food, I want to make sure no other dogs are getting it either! So it’s best I am separated when food is getting passed around. I don't necessarily have any objections to men, but I'm definitely a ladies' man. I love my female humans. When I’m super sleepy at night, I like to be left alone and will let out a rumble if you bother me, so I'm looking for a family who understands that I can be a bit moody and respects my boundaries.
In my foster home, I am not allowed on the couch or human beds and it’s important it stays this way because when I'm allowed on furniture, I like to try to be the boss and play king of the couch. I have very high prey drive with small dogs but loved getting chased by my friend who is a 25lb poodle mix. I would not do well at a crowded dog park. It’s very important I’m on a consistent food schedule because I get acid reflux and tummy aches if I go too long without eating. I like meeting dogs on leash and my tail wags a mile a minute but I’m not really sure what to do after the meeting stage so I’ll need a friend who will help me learn to play without scaring me.
Overall, I need a home that prioritizes structure and is willing to put in time training with me and teaching me boundaries. Mom says I need a family that will go to obedience training with me so we can all learn the same rules and the importance of playing by them! I have done well with children in highly controlled settings, but I am not suited for a home with young children as I like to chase them and they do not always respect my subtle dog cues telling them that I just want to be left alone. I would need to meet any potential dog siblings before adoption to make sure we will like each other.
I am neutered, UTD on shots, HW negative, and microchipped. So my $375 adoption fee is a pretty great deal!
