Meet AJ, a 4-year, 8-month-old neutered male Hound/German Shorthaired Pointer mix weighing approximately 35.8 lbs. AJ is an energetic, affectionate dog who is struggling in the shelter environment. The stress causes him to pace and run constantly in his outdoor area, leading to continued weight loss. He would greatly benefit from a foster or adoptive home where he can decompress, relax, and regain weight in a calmer setting.
Personality & Energy Level: AJ is very excitable, playful, and energetic. He loves to run and would thrive in an active home, especially one with a large, securely fenced yard. He is highly treat-motivated, which makes him a great candidate for ongoing training and enrichment activities.
Home & Training Notes: AJ does well in a crate and has been fostered previously with another dog. During that time, he was fed separately in a crate and showed no food aggression, even when the other dog approached. He is extremely food-motivated and may counter-surf, particularly during transitions. Still, this behavior began before his hypothyroidism was medically managed and is expected to improve with routine, exercise, and structure.
Other Animals: AJ has done well with another dog but cannot live with cats, as he will chase them. You'll need a cat-free home.
Medical Information: AJ is neutered, heartworm negative, and up to date on vaccinations (DHPP, Bordetella, Rabies). He has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and is under veterinary care. Veterinary records are available through Dr. Post at Valley River Humane Society in Murphy, NC.
Ideal Home: AJ is looking for an active adopter or foster who can provide regular exercise, structure, and positive reinforcement. A fenced yard and a lifestyle that supports his energy level will help him succeed.
