Maple - AL

7/16/2023

Picture
Maple is a beautiful and energetic 2.5-year-old GSP who is looking for a new home. Maple wants to be around her person (but is not a sit on your lap kind of GSP), loves to be outside and hunt.  The yard she runs on is about an acre and half, i.e lots of room to run and get energy out.  She can run for hours and never stop.  Loves to play fetch with a softball and loves to find the ball with hand commands if she doesn’t see where the ball landed. Hunting potential is very high. She is very smart, energetic, strong, and has a drive to hunt like no other GSP I’ve seen.   Maple would be a great working dog and would excel at hunting or any endurance dog sport.
She is great around other animals, (has been around two cats, one was a kitten when introduced).  Regularly around other dogs and animals with no issues.
Maple is house trained, crate trained, and knows basic obedience commands, sit, down, shake, whoa, up (loading into truck), drop.  Will do most anything for a treat.

Maple has had all her yearly vet visits. She is due vaccines July/August 2023 this will be taken care of before she leaves.

Medical info: Maple is spayed and micro-chipped (transferable and paperwork will be provided).  She will also be provided with her breeding papers, she may be AKC registered if desired.  She has a championship bloodline. Maple has had 3 seizures, starting at 1 ½ years old. (she had them every 3 months for a total of 3 seizures. They were in the middle of the night w/ waking).  Her vet was concerned about her taking oral flee and tick prevention medicine, this was discontinued and swapped to topical (gel on back) and she has not had a seizure since then, approximately over 6 months now. We are hopeful that the oral flee/tick medication was the cause, however the new owner may need to be prepared for this if she does have epilepsy. She is not on seizure medication.

Maple also has a lot of anxiety when left outside by herself or crated for a long period of time.  She was started on Amitriptyline (anxiety medication prescribed by vet- $12/month through Walgreens) to prevent nervous tendencies. She was licking/chewing her front paws, but has not done so since being on the medicine.

Reason for needing new home.
Recommend she be in a home without young children.

The GSP (hunting/working dog breed) is not good for our large family.  We have several young children (including a newborn). Maple requires constant supervision while inside, she is always on the hunt for a toy/food in the kitchen or in our kids hands. She doesn’t steal food from the adults, but the nibbling at our kids hands trying to get food concerns us. Maple has also unintentionally knocked our small kids off their feet, usually around stairs/doorways or inside. She doesn’t mean to hurt them but doesn’t worry about them at all when she runs and plays. Outside she generally loves family time and plays well. She needs space to run!

We are rehoming Maple out of love for her and know she would fit perfect in a different home setting with more focus on her.  She has a rehoming fee of $300.  Location is in Huntsville Alabama.
